Three engine options lie at the core of the 2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 range: a 5.7-liter V-8, a 6.4-liter V-8, and a 6.7-liter turbodiesel inline six-cylinder. Both gas engines are paired with six-speed automatic transmissions; the diesel gets a six-speed manual option or a choice of two six-speed automatics. Both rear-wheel drive (2WD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) models are available in both Ram 2500 and 3500 spec, with a wide range of cab styles and bed lengths.
The 5.7-liter that forms the base engine option is rated at 383 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Step up to the 6.4-liter and output rises to 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque. The diesel, available in three specifications, pushes the 2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 to beast mode, with up to 385 hp and 900 lb-ft of torque. The two lower-output versions of the diesel are rated at 350 hp / 660 lb-ft and 370 hp / 800 lb-ft, respectively.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rates the 2017 Ram 2500 Crew Cab models at four stars overall, with sub-ratings of four stars for frontal crash, five stars for side impact, and three stars for rollover. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) hasn't yet crash tested the 2017 Ram 2500 or Ram 3500.
While a nearly infinite list of cab, bed, engine, transmission, and drivetrain options influence total towing capacity, the Ram 2500 can be configured to tow up to 17,980 lbs, and the Ram 3500 can tow up to 30,000 lbs.
